- Legenda: Bangkok (Thailand), 17/06/2024.- 'Shakespeare Must Die' producer Manit Sriwanichpoom speaks in front of a poster of the movie prior to its premier at the House Samyan cinema in Bangkok, Thailand, 17 June 2024. The controversial Thai movie 'Shakespeare Must Die' has been allowed public screening in cinemas after it has been banned for 11 years on charges of being a national security threat. It was feared that the movie could incite public division due to scenes that make reference to the violent political crackdown of protests on 06 October 1976 when Thai university students were killed by police and extremist right wing groups. The movie was directed by independent Thai filmmaker Samanrat Ing Kanjanavanit, aka Ing K, as an adaptation of William Shakespeare's famous tragedy 'Macbeth'. The film originally was financially funded by the Office of Contemporary Art and Culture (OCAC) under the government of Thailand's first female Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and was banned by Yingluck's administration on 03 April 2012.
