Mouride believers attend Touba pilgrimage in Senegal
TOUBA (Senegal), 13/08/2025.- Muslims from the Senegalese Mourides Brotherhood of Islam attend the Grand Magal, or pilgrimage, of Touba, Senegal, 13 August 2025. The pilgrimage dates back to 1928 and commemorates the exile of Cheik Amadou Bamba in 1895 by the French colonial government. Bamba, the founder of 'Mouridiya' Mouridism, was sent into exile in Gabon, then Mauritania, for a total of 32 years as the French feared his political and religious influence in Senegal and West Africa. Millions of followers from the Senegalese diaspora return annually to attend the pilgrimage to honor Bamba, who is nowadays considered a symbol of resistance to colonialism.
